In Google Lore - what are ‘Hilltop’, ‘Florida’, and ‘Big Daddy’?

Hilltop: An old and often contested algorithm that calculates PageRank based on expert documents and topical relevancy. The theory behind it was to decrease the possibility of manipulation from buying high PR links from off topic pages. This was implemented during the Florida update, which is our next topic.

Florida: The highly controversial update implemented by Google in November of 2003, much to the chagrin of many seasonal retail properties. There were several theories as to what was included in this update; Over optimization filter, competitive term filter, and the Hilltop algorithm. This update had catastrophic results on many web merchants.

Big Daddy: A test data center used by Google to preview algorithm changes. This information was made public around November of 2005 by Matt Cutts and allowed marketers to preview upcoming SERP’s.

If you've done 6 months of SEO for a site and yet there haven't been any improvements, how would you go about diagnosing the problem?

I might approach the problem as if it were an entirely new project. Again taking a look at the keywords and phrases that I am attempting to optimize for and again taking a close inspection of top ranking competition. If the site is indexed and does show up in the irst 10 pages of a search but on in the top three, I would look into modification of major areas such as page titles, on page text, and page descriptions. If the site is not yet indexed or has been dropped from an index, there are major problems and the site may require a total re-work and re-submission.

Explain to me what META tags matter in today's world.

The most important META tag for SEO is your page description. Search engines do make use of this tag but it does not outweigh the title or visible text. The META keywords tag is not much of a factor in the major search engines but should not be overlooked.

What areas do you think are currently the most important in organically
ranking a site?

Text on page! Search engines utilize text and only text in providing search results. That text is found in many place including the URL and title of your pages as well as the visible text you place on your pages.

What SEO tools do you regularly use?

Google Analytics Tool,Google webmaster tools,Keyword analysis tools, keyword density tools, index checking, backlink checking, wordprocessor to check spelling and grammar, HTML validation and Much More.

Who are the two key people - who started Google?

Larry and Sergey decide that the BackRub search engine needs a new name. After some brainstorming, they go with Google -- a play on the word "googol," a mathematical term for the number represented by the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros. The use of the term reflects their mission to organize a seemingly infinite amount of information on the web.

What is an Organic search?

Organic Search refers to the results on the left hand side of the page when you search for a specific keyphrase on one of the Search Engines. Organizations do not pay for Organic Search listings, they are assigned by the Search Engines based on a wide range of criteria. Organic Search results typically account for 80-90% of all click-throughs from a search results page.

How does a search engine work and what is the future?

Search engines employ intelligent program robots called crawlers or spider, which visit thousands of websites every hour and index the pages according to the content. These indexes are huge databases containing references and links to the actual websites. When a user makes a search, the search engine looks through this database and displays the results.

What's the difference between PageRank and ToolBar PageRank?

- PageRank is a live calculation that goes far beyond a 1-10 scale. It's value in scoring has been consistently devalued since 2002-3.
TBPR is a google toolbar that only gets updated every 3 months or so and does not truly reflect PR
Actually, Google updates the "real" page rank continually - and it impacts the algorithm long before an update occurs for toolbar Page Rank.
The amount of page rank voted to any given link also depends on how many total links are on the linking page. Plus, Google can decide that certain pages should not transfer any Page Rank at all. So predicting what the toolbar will tell you in the future involves pretty much guesswork.

What is Latent Semantic Analysis (LSI - Indexing)?

- Latent semantic indexing helps search engines to find out what a web page is all about. It basically means you shouldn't focus on a single keyword when optimizing your web pages and when getting links.
The web pages on your web site should be related and focus mainly on a special topic while using different words that describe the topic. Use variations of your keyword and synonyms. That makes it easier for search engines to determine the topic of your site.

What is Phrase Based Indexing and Retrieval and what roles does it play?

- An information retrieval system that uses phrases to index, search, rank, and describe documents on the web. This system would look at the way those phrases were used across the web to decide if they were “valid” or “good” phrases. In addition to considering if their use on all webpages was significant statistically by how frequently they were used, it would also look at how those phrases might have been related to each other - certain phrases tend to be mentioned in the same documents as other phrases.
Used not only in onpage factors but off page as well for creating effective link text strategies. Google even used it for Spam detection (potentially) these days. There is a great deal of information of relevance contained in here.
